TLS – Securing Data In Motion

Security and Connectivity for the IoT Edge

Need a commercial alternative to OpenSSL?

Looking to replace OpenSSL with an alternative commercial TLS solution? Allegro offers a safe and proven TLS alternative that utilizes our FIPS Validated ACE cryptography module at its core.  Engineered for the rigors of embedded computing, Allegro’s RomSTL is highly flexible, scalable, and portable across hardware and operating system environments.

The following highlights a few key differences between RomSTL and OpenSSL.

Ease of Use

Over the years, OpenSSL has collected a broad range of source code, all from different authors and wildly different coding standards.  This creates headaches for those trying to maintain and properly test as new security patches are released.  Engineered from the ground up, Allegro’s RomSTL has been designed with modularity and maintenance in mind.  With a simple and well-documented API, RomSTL and the entire Allegro AE suite of toolkits make use of a field-proven abstraction layer for OS, TCP/UDP connectivity, and I/O that is currently deployed in over 325 million devices worldwide.

Memory Usage

RomSTL and the complete Allegro AE suite of products are designed to be sensitive to specific resource needs.  Many of the Allegro products include compilation switches allowing the user to select between memory size and performance.  This allows our customers to create customizable build sizes and runtime memory footprints that are often 10 to 20 times smaller than OpenSSL.  For IoT / IoMT environments where footprint and runtime sizes are critical or cloud environments where memory usage per-connection makes a big impact, the ability to tightly control these parameters and influence performance helps predict success.

Standards Support

RomSTL utilizes Allegro’s FIPS Validated ACE cryptography toolkit at its core for all encryption.  This means, RomSTL always makes use of the latest NIST cryptography implementation guidelines for keeping your data secure while in motion.  RomSTL supports TLS 1.1, TLS 1.2 and DTLS 1.0, DTLS 1.2 (client and server) to secure data transmission.  The Allegro team is dedicated to supporting new standards as they become available and accepted as best industry practices.

Commercially Backed Software

All the Allegro AE products are backed by an outstanding company with over 20 years experience of helping customers succeed.  Allegro cares about its users and their security and activity work to support, improve and expand our products to meet the changing needs of our customers.

Portability

All Allegro AE toolkits are highly portable across OS and processor families. Delivered in ANSI-C source code all products utilize a field-proven abstraction layer to enable portability with any OS, TCP/IP stack, and file system environment. Interface files for leading OS environments are provided.

Support

For over 20 years, Allegro has been helping customers succeed at creating secure connected devices.  One critical element to helping customer succeed is providing technical support.  The Allegro AE products were written from the ground up and maintained by the original developers.  Available via email and phone, your questions are answered quickly and accurately to put you on a path to success.
