The intent of the IoT Cybersecurity Improvement Act 2020 is to ensure IoT technologies purchased and deployed by the U.S. Government meet well-understood security standards.
The legislation is based on recommendations developed by the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) for safeguarding IoT devices against security breaches. NIST created six primary documents that outlined both technical and non-technical guidelines for IoT security implementation. Ultimately any device manufacturer that does not follow the guidelines will be shut out from U.S. government contracts.
