Java Cryptography Extension (JCE) with FIPS Validated Cryptography for Edge Computing Environments

by

Easily integrate FIPS validated cryptography into your Java Runtime Environment (JRE) using Allegro’s JCE for ACE.

BOXBOROUGH, MA, and ARLINGTON, VA September 14, 2022 – At the International Cryptography Module Conference 2022 (ICMC22) in Arlington, Virginia, Allegro Software, a leading supplier of security and connectivity software for the Internet of Things (IoT), today announced Java Cryptography Extension (JCE) support for the Allegro Cryptography Engine (ACE) FIPS validated cryptography module. This addition combines the performance and scalability of ACE with the Java Cryptography Architecture (JCA) provider framework for utilizing cryptographic algorithms in Java applications.  Allegro’s FIPS validated cryptography module is ideally suited for resource-constrained run-time environments and is pre-integrated with the Allegro EdgeAgent Suite of security and connectivity software toolkits. ACE, along with the complete EdgeAgent Suite of toolkits are delivered as ANSI-C source and can be used to quickly build customized IoT applications and production-ready IoT edge solutions.

ALLEGRO’S JCE INTERFACE – A HYBRID APPROACH

Since Java’s initial release in 1996, the utilization of Java and the breadth of application deployments has grown significantly. Java has more recently found its way into the IoT marketplace and related edge computing deployments for collecting, correlating, and securing data. Using Java typically requires more resources than are available in deeply embedded IoT devices like sensor arrays. IoT edge computing platforms are also more resource-limited than their enterprise counterparts.

Allegro’s JCE interface combines the performance and scalability of ACE running in the native platform environment with an advanced cryptography provider interface integrated into the JCA. Engineered to take advantage of the Java standards-based interface, the Allegro JCE is a drop-in replacement for standard or third-party cryptography providers that uses limited resources, provides improved performance, and meets industry requirements for FIPS validation.

SIMPLE INSTALLATION AND EASE OF USE

With a variety of Java Runtime Environments (JRE) in the market, developers can select one, or in some cases, multiple JREs that best fit their specific deployment needs. From a full implementation within the enterprise to a specifically scaled-back deployment at the edge of a network, Allegro’s JCE is quick to install and easy to use.

For environments that require Java Code Signing, Allegro provides a pre-signed JAR file along with a coordinating native ACE implementation. Additionally, a complete source code tree is provided along with detailed manuals and step-by-step instructions for targeting a custom platform. In either case, a simple configuration enables the Allegro JCE provider for use in your application.

“The increasing use of Java to meet edge computing needs is helping drive digital business transformations. While not as resource-constrained as deeply embedded systems, IoT Edge computing devices have resource limitations that, when exceeded, can adversely impact performance,” says Bob Van Andel, President of Allegro. “Allegro’s JCE and accompanying native ACE library, are specifically engineered for resource-sensitive environments while taking full advantage of cryptographic hardware acceleration and entropy generation to enhance performance when available. This, in turn, enables IoT manufacturers to proactively build trusted FIPS validated cryptography into their edge computing platforms.”

The full Allegro EdgeAgent Suite is provided as ANSI-C source code and is available today. For more information, stop by the Allegro Software Booth at ICMC22 or visit the Allegro Software website: https://www.allegrosoft.com
